At some point, every counsellor will work with a client who is navigating a separation or divorce.

When this happens, the counsellor is motivated to do their best to support their clients through this hard time. However, the complexities of working with a family during breakdown have far reaching effects that can seriously impact the children involved, and which hold consequential repercussions for the counsellor if they are not prepared to work within the legal system.

A strong background working with families through breakdown is not enough to ensure that a counsellor is ready to work within the family law environment.

As a result, many well-intentioned counsellors end up with complaints against them to their regulating bodies.
