How to choose a counsellor and what to expect from your first session

People explore counselling for many different reasons and at many different points in their lives. Whether you are wanting to navigate mental health issues, cope with life change, or gain new perspectives or self-knowledge, finding a clinical counsellor who is the right fit and getting started on your counselling journey can feel daunting.

In this Matters of the Mind workshop, two Registered Clinical Counsellors will walk attendees through how to find a clinical counsellor who meets their specific needs and goals. We’ll also explore what to expect from your first session, and how this first appointment is an opportunity to ask questions, discuss any concerns, and see if the clinical counsellor is a good match for you.

About the presenters:

Jan McNeill

Co-owner and RCC at Covalent Health Consulting, Nanaimo

My philosophy is to empower my clients with the ability to no longer need me because they have the tools to cope themselves. My belief is by having a warm, engaging therapist to listen and help shift one’s perspective, one can generate healing. My goal is to meet you where you are at and to understand where you want you to go in your healing.

My initial entry into this field over 20 years ago was through grief and loss, working with special needs, and this culminated into working with trauma, addictions and life changes.

Claire Maisonneuve

Director of Alpine Counselling Clinic, Vancouver

My approach to therapy is holistic in that I address your issues from all aspects of your being, including your mind, body, emotions and spirit. I have a passion for helping individuals heal difficult emotions and find their way to create a life they love and become the person they admire.

For over 35 years I have explored, experimented and implemented different approaches and strategies in my search for overcoming anxiety and finding inner peace. This has led me to a deep understanding of the workings of the mind, the heart and the soul.
