Request for session notes

    Hello all,

I have had a request for my session notes from a lawyer on behalf of my client, who also signed a release form. At this point, I have 17 pages of messy, handwritten notes for the 6 sessions. I posted on a couple of FB pages to look for some guidance around this, as I am hesitant to just photocopy my notes. I asked the lawyer if I could write a summary of the sessions, but they have come back asking that I not prepare a summary report, but provide the actual counselling records/notes. I would appreciate any guidance/advice on this matter, as I have not had a request like this in the past.

Hello…how did you manage this request. I have had a similar request recently. I managed this request based on my principles, based on the client’s wishes and not necessary based on what others believed I had to provide. This is a great questions for supervision, a supervision that can help you decide what is important for you and where your ethical boundaries lie.

    Hello Eliane,

Thanks for your response here! I see that most of the discussions on this board have no replies, so it seems to be under utilized, for some reason!

To answer your question . . . I didn’t have to respond as there was enough back and forth communication about the reason for the request and the parameters and expectations that I think they may have just go exhausted and gave up. So, in the end, I didn’t have to do anything but just.gli v through the process was helpful.

I think your comments are fair and insightful.

    Cheers.
