Business License Question

Hi. Rachael here. I have sole proprietorship counselling business out of New Westminster, and I work as an independent contractor with one practice in New Westminster and another in East Van. I have acquired the business license for NW, but I have recently been told that I need a business license because of the contract work I am doing out of East Van. I talked to the City of Vancouver and they confirmed that, indeed, I should have the license. So, I guess if I were to also join a practice in Port Moody, I’d also have to pay for and acquire a license there. Can anyone comment on the validity of this. It seems really unfair for small counselling practices to have to spend $$ to get licensed in every city in which they may have contracts to work. But hey, if this is how it works, I’d like to abide by the laws. Thanks for your input! Note: I’m not an employee with any practice, but an independent contractor.

Rachael, welcome to the multi-municipal business license holders club haha. I have 3 of them: New West, Vancouver and Langley 💃🏻. Sadly, this is our situation if we work in multiple municipalities.

      Hello Rachel,

I am in the same boat. I’m in a small town of Interior BC and have business licenses to work remotely, in Victoria and Vancouver. The license for Vancouver is 3 times more expensive than the one for Victoria, interestingly..!

Thanks for the responses! Yes, I have discovered the answers I am looking for. Just paid for my Vancouver business license. Not going to practice out of Port Moody so as to avoid another license and fee. New West and Vancouver will have to be enough. I wish there was like a lower mainland coverage type of licensing for independent contractors. Sure would be convenient.
